Dominic West (Iago), Clarke Peters (Othello) and Lily James (Desdemona) in Shakespeare’s Othello, at the Sheffield Crucible, 2011.
The night belongs to Iago. West has a knack for evil, clothing it in inconspicuous garb — able to slip about the place unnoticed. He has adopted a rough “ee bah gum” accent, a triumph of apparent trustworthiness — and a good fit for his rugged good looks, and rasping, alehouse heartiness. He grins, he glints, he lets shades of the northern jester creep in — and you can see why everyone’s his fool.
