Silent Shakespeare

What if there were productions of Shakespeare that made use of all stage directions and conventions of his plays, but no words?

Before I find myself under your thunder, lightning or rain, consider how almost every line in Hamlet has been quoted and ingrained in the mind and mouth of the English speaker. As a Bardolater I know exactly what Horatio or Launcelot will say next - wouldn’t this hinder an otherwise sublime theatrical experience?

A silent production therefore allows the audience to think, in the absence of words, about what the actors were meant to say. This gives them more room to understand Shakespeare’s genius and the arguments and topics he touches upon in his words. The balcony scene in Romeo and Juliet would be rendered more passionate, moving and romantic if our imaginations, running uninhibited, said the lines for us.

Just a thought.
